Recap of quadratic equations
For a recap of quadratic equations, click on the 'Resources: Maths Is Fun' page. This will be useful as a refresher of quadratic equations.
Getting started on the investigation
To assist you with making a start on your basketball modelling problem, I have outlined some steps you should take.
Step 1: Open https://www.desmos.com/calculator and play around with creating a quadratic equation which resembles someone shooting a basketball. Click on the 'Resources: Desmos' page to assist you with this.
Step 2: Explore the interactive simulation https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/curve-fitting which will help you understand how to fit a quadratic curve through three points. Follow the 'Resources: PhET' page for more information on this.
Step 3: Identify how tall your player is, how far away they are standing from the hoop, how high the basketball ring is, and diameter of the ball and the hoop. These are needed for identifying your start and end co-ordinates.
Step 4: Calculate your quadratic equation by the method of substitution. Confirm your calculations using Desmos and PhET.
Goodluck and enjoy.
